                                                                                                                 Trip Introduction

TIBET-NEPAL CROSS COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING

Tibet- Shangri-La, the land of snows is well known as the roof of the World. Tibet is the land of ancient Buddhist culture having awesome landscapes, artistic monasteries and centuries old caravan trails. Tibet the roof of the world, lies on a plateau at an average elevation of 4,000 m. It is bounded by the Kunlun mountains to the north and the Himalayas to the south. Tibet covers an area of 1.2 million sq. km, and has a population of 2.3 million. Tibet is a sacred land of myths and mysteries inhabited by the ever smiling people, It has not only exerted magnetic spell upon travelers for centuries but also upon spies, missionaries, scholars, geographers, mystics, soldiers and cranks etc, yet, only few ntrepid serious and determined travellers have been able to make it. Tibet being extremely remote and isolated by the most formidable Himalayan ranges, a fascinating world of timeless splendor, unique tradition and breathtaking scenery awaits all travelers to the roof of the world.

BEST SEASON & WEATHER

From April to October is the best season for riding. There isn't much rain in Tibet as it's a plateau behind the Himalayan range but it rains to some extent during July and August and rest of the season is fine with clear sky. There may be snow fall in the high passes if it rains during April and end of October. Temperature ranges from 0-15 degree C depending upon altitude & weather.

CLIMATE

The bulk of the trip is crossing the arid Tibetan Plateau, which lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and does not receive much annual precipitation. Our departures during the season are timed to miss the monsoon season in Nepal, and we should be guaranteed clear, dry weather for the last leg into Kathmandu. The weather on the Tibetan Plateau during the day will be surprisingly mild and warm, while nights will be clear and crisp. Temperatures will range from 20 degrees Centigrade during the day to well below freezing at night. As on any of our routes though, storms can occur at anytime along with a sprinkling of snow.

SECURITY

Tibetans are generally honest and Hotel staff can be trusted not to walk off with your belongings. Pickpockets are purse snatchers and are virtually unknown and there seem to be no scams aimed at parting you from your money. The situation has eased and Tibetans no longer risk being punished for talking with foreigners. Avoid taking photographs of Chinese soldiers.

GROUP SIZE

Min 2pax, plus Nepali guide-medically trained and experienced, drivers, Tibetan guide and extra Nepali MTB guide if numbers dictate.

GRADE: Cross Country

These trips follow mainly vehicle-width dirt roads, which may be smooth, gritty, stony, rocky, rutted, loose or hard-packed. The tracks will rise and fall over undulating, hilly and mountainous terrain, but single-track riding will not be included in the main itinerary (optional bits are often possible). Some experience of off-road riding is advisable before booking, but the amount recommended will vary from trip to trip.

Travel Permits & Restrictions to Travel Tibet
- Aside from visas for China, travelers to Tibet must also obtain permits from the Tibetan Tourism Bureau. Alliance Trekking will organize your Tibet travel      permit. Please send copy of your passport if you are planning to enter Tibet via Nepal as soon as you book the trip. In the condition you are planning to enter Tibet via China; you need to send us copy of your passport and Chinese visa as soon as you book the trip.
- Traveling individually to Tibet is officially not allowed. Travelers must officially be part of a group tour with a guide who will help you dealing with the Chinese authorities at checkpoints en route.
- You are not allowed to travel in Tibet with an individual Chinese visa via Nepal (your individual Chinese visa such as multiple entry tourist visas, working visas, student visas, etc., all will get canceled once we apply for Chinese visa from Nepal. There is no other way to save your individual visas, only you can save these visas by entering Tibet from mainland China to Tibet, i.e. taking Lhasa to Kathmandu tour instead of Kathmandu to Lhasa tour.)
- If you are planning to enter Tibet via mainland China, you need to organize your Chinese visa from Chinese embassy in your home country BUT If you are entering Tibet via Nepal, your Chinese visa must only be organized through Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu is opened only Monday to Friday. Generally on normal condition, it takes 4 working days to issue Chinese visa from Chinese embassy in Kathmandu. In urgent condition, we can also organize your Chinese visas in 2 working days too by paying express fee but we only charge normal visa fee with the clients and take responsibility of express fee on our own.
- Please make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months before travelling. Visa is not provided to the passports with less than six months’ validity. You need two passport-sized photos for the visa application.
- Travelers must use same passport while traveling Nepal and Tibet (while traveling Tibet via Nepal, you will get Chinese visa only in the passport that is stamped with Nepalese visa). We have found tourists traveling with more than one passport but while traveling Tibet via Nepal, you need to use the same passport for Nepal and Tibet.
- All Tibet permits can be obtained using photocopy of your passport but you must need your original passport to apply for Chinese visa which is collected by Alliance Trekking once you arrive in Kathmandu.
- Itinerary and the places to visit in Tibet must be stated clearly and finalized in advance because while applying for a Chinese visa from Kathmandu, a copy of this should be attached. The visa is issued accordingly. According to the places mentioned in the itinerary, travel permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau- TTB (Lhasa) is obtained. Alliance Trekking will do this for you.
- If you would like to head out to mainland China after your Tibet travel, the group visa will allow you to enter but once you are in mainland China this visa will be replaced with an individual Chinese visa. (if duration of your group visa covers all your programs in mainland China also, you can use it during your stay in mainland China or it can be replaced by individual visa, it depends on Chinese officials’ decision).
- You are not allowed to take any Tibetan religious books, literatures, photographs, especially related to Dalai Lama during your travel to Tibet. If found, these related possessions are confiscated and you are not allowed to enter Tibet.
- It is very tough to get your group visa extended, so better to let us know about your programs very clearly during your trip planning phase so according to that we will try to arrange your visa and permit. However, the rules and regulations regarding Chinese visa and Tibet travel permit get changing very often, therefore we suggest our customers to consult with our travel consultant to be sure regarding the visa issues so that your all programs and plans goes smoothly without any obstacles.

Q:- Do we need Tibet visa separately to travel Tibet ?

A:- Yes, you have to have Tibet visa to travel to Tibet and you even need Tibet travel permit but we issue it together (visa and permits) before your travel.

Q:- How long does it take to get Tibet visa/permit ?

A:- It takes at least a week process to get Tibet visa/permit however you get visa/permit paying extra cost(urgent charge) within 4 days and even within a day but other than American natioanlity it will cost one week process visa fees US$ 50/- 4days process US$ 65/- and one day process (top urgent) will cost US$ 85/- per person whereas for American will cost US$  142/-, 180/- and US$ 198/- respectively.

Q:- Will I be able to travel Tibet with my Chinese visa ?

A:- So far rule is to go one country you can not have two visas (Chinese and Tibet visa) so if you have Chinese visa  you can not travel to Tibet. You have to get Tibet Visa/permit (by the way Tibet visa is paper visa so there will be no sticker visa on your passport exceptstamp on it when you entry/exit Tibet).Surprisingly Chinese Embassy will cancel your Chinese visa if you already have it to go to Tibet. So our recommendation is do not take Chinese visa from your home country/Nepal if you are planning to go to Tibet. This policy may change but we do not know until Chinese Authority announce it.You may have few extra more days Tibet visa so that by the same visa you may visit to China but once you get to China you must leave on the day your Tibet visa expires and to extend your visa in China is not in our control at all.

Q:- Do we need to show our original passport to get Tibet visa ?

A:- We can process/apply your visa even by the copy of your orginal passport but you have to show your original passport obtain visa in this case you will have to pay urgent visa fees however in a week process we have to submit your original passport to get the visa.
